There’s something deeply satisfying about working with solid oak. It’s heavy, durable and completely honest as a material. It doesn’t forgive poor workmanship, and it certainly doesn’t bend to rushed decisions. You have to understand it, work with it and respect it.

This bespoke oak garden bridge was designed and built entirely by myself in my workshop in Essex, using solid oak throughout. From the main curved beams to the deck boards and posts, every component was crafted from substantial sections of oak, chosen for both strength and character.
The aim from the outset was to create a bridge that felt architectural yet natural — something that would sit comfortably in a garden setting while still making a statement through its form and craftsmanship.
Shaping the Curve
The defining feature of the bridge is its gentle arc. Creating that curve from solid oak is not something that happens by chance; it requires careful marking out, patience and a clear understanding of how the timber behaves.
Using traditional oak framing principles as the foundation, I set out the curve directly onto the beam before beginning the shaping process. To remove the bulk of the material and establish the initial form, I used a small chainsaw. When working with large sections of oak, it’s an efficient and controlled way to carve out the rough profile.
From there, the process becomes more refined. The curve was carefully worked and finished by hand, bringing it into a smooth, balanced line that feels right both structurally and visually. It’s a combination of traditional methods and modern tools — using each where it makes the most sense — but always finishing with craftsmanship at the forefront.
Building the Structure

Once the main beams were shaped, the bridge began to take form in the workshop. The heavy oak posts were positioned and aligned, the rails fitted, and the deck boards laid to follow the rise of the arch. Working within my Essex workshop allowed complete control over accuracy and detailing before the bridge left the bench.
Every element was built from solid oak, and that brings a certain discipline to the process. There’s no covering up mistakes and no disguising poor lines — the timber shows everything. That’s part of what makes working with oak so rewarding; when it’s done properly, the result speaks for itself.
Designed to Last

Because the bridge is constructed entirely from solid oak, it’s built not just for appearance but for longevity. Over time, the timber will naturally weather and silver, blending into its surroundings while retaining the strength it was built with.
This isn’t a lightweight garden feature or a decorative add-on. It’s a handcrafted oak structure, designed and built to endure.
Projects like this are a reminder of why traditional methods still matter. Taking raw timber and shaping it into something purposeful, structural and built to last is what Gozzett Carpentry is all about — designed and made in Essex, from solid oak, the proper way.
